BUNGE Sustainable Program Donates 200 Shea Rollers to Mokwa
communities in Partnership with Salid Agriculture
Ltd Mokwa LGA, Niger State – May 13, 2025
In a major step toward rural empowerment and sustainable agriculture, BUNGE
Sustainable Program, in collaboration with Salid Agriculture Ltd, has donated
200 modern shea rollers to the hardworking men and women of Mokwa LGA,
Niger State. The donation aims to revolutionize shea nut processing in the
region, promoting efficiency, safety, and community development.
The handover ceremony, which took place in Kudu LGA, was graced by community
leaders, agricultural stakeholders, and rural women’s groups. BUNGE was
represented by Ms. Babra Macon Therisa, who reiterated the organization’s
commitment to sustainable farming practices and the empowerment of local
economies. “This donation is not just about equipment – it’s about creating safer
working conditions for women, aiding the picking of shea nuts, and increasing
productivity in a sustainable way,” said Ms. Therisa.
The Shea Roller: A Game-Changer in Local Agriculture
Traditionally, picking shea nuts is a labor-intensive and often hazardous task,
especially for women who make up the majority of processors in rural Nigeria. The
shea roller is a mechanical device designed to aid the picking process, drastically
reducing the time, effort, and health risks involved.
Benefits of the shea roller include:
– Enhanced productivity: Helps pick nuts faster and in larger quantities.
– Improved safety: Reduces exposure to hand injuries and strain caused by manual
picking.
– Higher quality output: Delivers consistent results, leading to better shea butter
production.
– Economic empowerment: Enables women to process more nuts in less time,
thereby increasing income potential.Impact on the Mokwa (LGA) Community
The donation is expected to benefit over 1,000 local processors, most of whom are
women. This initiative aligns with BUNGE’s long-term vision to support gender
equity, rural livelihoods, and sustainable agricultural development across Africa.
Community leaders in Mokwa LGA and other regions of Niger State praised the
initiative, calling it a “lifeline” for rural families who depend
heavily on shea production for their income. Representatives from Salid
Agriculture Ltd emphasized that this is only the beginning of a broader
collaboration aimed at introducing smart agricultural tools and training programs
throughout the region.
